Alcohol Anonymous celebrated its birthday this week, 70 years after a New York doctor and a failed stockbroker joined  forces to tackle their addiction. The organisation now has more than 2 million members in 150 countries and holds 3,600 weekly meetings in England, Scotland and Wales. AA trustee Carol Titley said the membership figures told only part of the life-changing stories: ‘behind each alcoholic who stops drinking, there areuntold numbers of families, friends, neighbours and employers, as well as healthcare, psychiatric, social and probation professionals who benefit.’ The face of AA was changing to reflect modern trends, according to Ms Titley. Latest anonymous member surveys showed half were women and three- quarters were under the age of 45. Recent initiatives had aimed to reach out to black and minority ethniccommunities, ‘underlining that AA is available toanyone who wants to stop drinking’.
