  • Recent trends in benzodiazepine use: harms, challenges and best practice

Recent trends in benzodiazepine use: harms, challenges and best practice

    August 18, 2022

    3:00pm – 4:30pm

Deaths related to drug poisonings in England and Wales have been steadily rising for almost a decade, with 2020 seeing a record 4,561 people dying.

Within that complexity, one rarely talked about trend stands out – the rise in deaths where benzodiazepines are implicated. This trend is already well understood in Scotland, where deaths involving benzodiazepines have increased by a staggering 500% since 2008.

This webinar will explore these trends and their implications for people who use drugs and the treatment and recovery system. We learn about the complex picture of benzodiazepine use – from prescribed drugs to newer illicit “street benzos” – and how services are tackling these challenges.

We will hear from a range of experts about the latest thinking and best practice in this area, and we will discuss how the system can better respond in the context of the government’s new Drug Strategy and funding for treatment and recovery.
