Suhayl Patel wants to end the “sharam” – Urdu for shame – about talking about gambling in Muslim communities.

He is the BAME Programme Manager at Beacon Counselling Trust, a charity providing education, treatment and support in relation to gambling harm in the North West of England, and he’s been working with the Muslim Council of Britain, Lancashire Council of Mosques, and Lancashire BME Network, to promote greater openness in the UK’s Muslim communities around gambling-related harm.

Join us on 25 September to hear Suhayl’s story and find out more about how faith communities can develop a more compassionate response to gambling issues.

6:30 pm: What's Scarier: Drugs or Drug Policy? - with Prof David Nutt

October 31, 2023

Tuesday, 31 Oct 2023
6:30pm - 8:00pm
University of York

For half a century, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 has dominated ill-judged approaches to UK drug control. Prohibition, criminalisation, blanket bans and blindness to scientific facts have distorted justice, prevented lifesaving research and thwarted calls for reform. £6.9 billion is spent annually to enforce the 50-year-old drug laws, meanwhile, the number of drug users in the UK is growing dramatically, and the drug-related death rate is 4.5 times the EU average. On the flip side, clinical researchers across the globe are amassing evidence for the revolutionary potential of psychedelics in mental healthcare, revealing significant improvements in disorders such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. Nonetheless, the use of psychoactive substances is punishable with up to 7 years of prison.

All things considered, should we worried about the drugs or the drug policy?

7:00 pm: Let's Talk About Addiction

November 2, 2023

On November 2nd (7:00pm - 8:45pm), at the peak of Addiction Awareness Week 2023, Taking Action on Addiction will be presenting an unforgettable event titled "Let's Talk About Addiction".

This national moment will be a platform for open, honest, and compassionate conversations about addiction and recovery. It's an opportunity to bring together family, friends, and colleagues to share experiences, raise awareness, and foster understanding about a topic that affects us all.

This years tagline is 'Everybody Knows Somebody', a reference to how common addiction is in our society.

It's more than likely that whoever you are, you will know someone that has been affected by addiction – whether it's a family member, a friend, a colleague or themselves.

The evening will serve as a powerful conduit, connecting households across the nation in a unique and intimate way. As hosts open their homes and hearts, they'll be joining a nationwide network of conversations, all happening simultaneously, all focused on this crucial topic.
