Mom accused of giving methadone to daughter

A 53-year-old mother from Vermont has been accused of giving her daughter small doses of methadone, without the daughter’s knowledge.

According to affidavits filed with the court, in early March, the Department for Children and Families notified Springfield police of an investigation of a child abuse complaint. Police first spoke with the girl, who said she began having terrible headaches in mid-February … Affidavits state the girl told police [her mother] gave her some of her medication.”

The girl and her mother have both been diagnosed with ADHD. The mother claimed her medication wasn’t working, so she began taking her daughter’s. She then began giving her daughter 10 milligram doses of methadone several times a day, in an attempt to combat her daughter’s headaches. Though the mother has been charged, she is free – without bail – pending trial.

Methadone is a highly effective component of medically assisted opiate addiction treatment -- but when used without proper medical supervision, the drug can have very dangerous side effects, including death.
